What It Really Means to Embody Self-Care as Self-Leadership
When I was in the depths of burnout, I knew my life had to change.
So I did what everyone said: I started doing more self-care.
I moved my body. I lit the candles. I made time for rest. I listened to positive affirmations on repeat. And to be fair, it helped—momentarily.
But what I was doing was maintenance, not transformation.
It took the edge off—but it didn’t address what was happening beneath the surface.
Because I was still over-giving. Still people-pleasing. Still contorting myself to meet everyone else’s needs and leaving myself until last—if I made the list at all.
What I really needed wasn’t another strategy.
I needed something deeper. More honest. More disruptive.
I needed to choose myself—not just in theory, but in the way I was living.
That’s when everything changed.
So What Is Self-Care as Self-Leadership?
It’s not a routine. It’s not a productivity hack.
It’s how you relate to yourself.
Self-leadership is what happens in the moment you say:
“I matter enough to honour what I need—even if it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, or unexpected.”
It’s what happens when you:
Cancel the thing you said yes to out of obligation.
Speak up when you usually shrink.
Stop outsourcing your worth to being liked, needed, or productive
Make decisions that align with your values—not what everyone else needs.
It’s the way you walk yourself through the discomfort of setting a boundary.
The way you hold yourself with compassion instead of criticism.
The way you stop waiting for permission to live differently.
Self-care as self-leadership isn’t about escaping your life.
It’s about creating a new relationship with how you move through it.
It’s the difference between knowing better and doing differently.
If you’ve been doing “all the right things” and still feel off, maybe it’s not because you’re doing it wrong—
Maybe it’s because you’re ready to lead yourself from a new place.
And maybe that’s not soft. Maybe that’s a little messy.
But maybe that’s the most powerful thing you’ll ever do.
